The Igbo Catholic Community in Houston, (ICCH), is a community of Igbos (Ndigbo) from the South Eastern part of Nigeria. Our language, (Igbo) and our culture are fast declining and so is our identity. An Igbo student, Chidi Obi was called up in the class to talk on the Igbo language and culture. "Who? Me? You are talking to the wrong person", he expressed nervously. At home, Chidi, anxious to learn, asked his dad to enlighten him on the language and cultures of NdIgbo. "Sorry son, it has been a long time your mother and I left Ala Igbo. I will refer you to one of the elders at the Igbo Catholic Community for help". This is our problem.
In all foreign lands, we have: (1) children like Chidi Obi born in foreign lands, (2) their parents who left the homeland a long time ago, with no idea of when to return, and (3) old parents who have waited in vain, for the return of the children they sent abroad to study and come back, and have decided to join them.
To keep the Igbo language and culture alive in the three categories of igbos above, the ICCH has bought and paid in full for a 5-acre track of land on which to build a church where the medium of worship would be based on the Igbo language, a Cultural/community Center where the Igbo language and culture would be taught and practiced.
We hereby solicit donations from members, individuals, corporations, NGOs; who are sympathetic to our cause and share in our visions of preserving the Igbo language and culture.
